Just north of Mexico and only a few miles from white sandy beaches on the Gulf
of Mexico, sits Harlingen. Thanks to the two major bird flyways that cross over
it, Harlingen is home to world-renowned tropical bird watching and the Rio
Grande Birding Festival. The area is a nature-lover's paradise with nearby
beaches, a 40-acre (16-ha) bird sanctuary and over 45,000 acres (18,211 ha) of
wildlife preserves surrounding the city. Downtown Harlingen is rich with antiques,
clothing, crafts and food, and is home to a large street-vendor market the first
Saturday of every month. Car fanatics enjoy the Chevrolet
Antique Car Museum while history buffs marvel at the Iwo
Jima Museum, home to the original sculpture used to cast the bronze Marine
Corps Memorial in Arlington,
Virginia. The warm sun, great
shopping and tourist attractions in Harlingen welcome any traveler.
